Why Do We Have These Crazy Rules?

Suppose you came home from a party late one night and found lights on in your house, where there shouldn't be any lights.  You looked in the window and saw two guys with baseball bats.  They were smashing dishes, chairs, and even wall board, everything in sight.

Of course, the thing to do would be to call the cops, and you did.  The desk sergeant asked what was going on, and you told him. " Oh," he said, "we know about those two.  They are both lawyers.  One is a judge.  Yes, we are the police, but we have rules here."

"What rules, you ask?

"Well," he says, "because those two are lawyers, the Supreme Court protects them until they are done with the baseball bats.  We can't arrest the lawyer until the judge gives us permission, which won't happen, and we can't arrest the judge until he is finished, or until you walk away from your property."

"Yes," he added, "I know it is a surreal set of rules, but thems the rules."

"Who will make me whole?  you ask.

"No one requires the lawyer to have insurance, and the judge is immune from lawsuits,"  he replies with a smirk.  "Suck it up, buddy."

"How long will they be there?" you ask.

"Until they get tired, or you get tired, and they have a lot of stamina." he says?

"But what will happen to the lawyer and the judge when they finally leave?" you ask.

"Don't worry," he answers, "the lawyer will get the maximum penalty from Attorney Regulation, a private reprimand."

"And the judge?" you ask.

"That's a state secret!" he replies, "But if the lawyer gets only a reprimand, what do you suppose they will do to the judge?  If he is still in office in three months, he only got a private reprimand as well."

"Why do we have these crazy rules?"  you ask.

"Mary Mullarkey says that for us to interrupt the guys with the baseball bats, we would have to put our finger on the scales of justice, and she doesn't want that to happen.  Isn't that high minded of her?  Suck it up, buddy.  Suck it up."

You walk away in disgust.
